Andoni Zubizarreta Profile

Andoni Zubizarreta was the Spanish international goalkeeper for more than a decade, who racked up an impressive 126 appearances for his country between 1985 and 1998.

With Atletico Madrid, Zubizarreta was instrumental in the back-to-back league successes of 1982/83 and 1983/84 and featured as an ever-present in the league winning sides.

When in 1986 he transferred to Barcelona, Andoni Zubizarreta Urreta, to use his full name, became the most expensive goalkeeper in the World, with a transfer record, at the time, fee of 1.6million Euro (or its currency equivalent!).

With Barcelona, Zubizarreta would not disappoint – he missed only four matches in four league campaigns as Barcelona swept to La Liga victory four times in succession between 1991 and 1994. In 1992, he would also lift the UEFA Champions League trophy after keeping a clean sheet in the final against Sampdoria.
